Sodium/Hydrogen Exchanger 6 (NHE6)
The SLC9A6 gene encodes a monovalent sodium-selective sodium/hydrogen exchanger (NHE) that is found in the membranes of intracellular organelles such as mitochondria and endosomes. The cDNA represents at least 90% of the full-length SLC9A6 transcript; however, since it lacks an in-frame stop codon upstream of the first ATG, it may be missing 5-prime coding sequence.SLC9A6 shares 29% amino acid sequence identity with human NHE2 (SLC9A2) across 418 amino acids. Northern blot analysis detected SLC9A6 expression in all human tissues tested, with the highest expression in brain and skeletal muscle, and lower expression in heart, lung, liver, pancreas, small intestine, colon, kidney, spleen, thymus, peripheral blood leukocytes, prostate, testis, ovary, and placenta.
