Intrahepatic Biliary Epithelial Cells (IBEC)

Intrahepatic biliary epithelial cells, also known as cholangiocytes, are one of the two major epithelial cell lineages in the liver, alongside hepatocytes. These specialized cells line the intrahepatic bile ducts, forming a barrier between the ductal lumen and the surrounding liver parenchyma.

The primary physiological function of cholangiocytes is the modification of hepatocyte-derived bile as it flows through the biliary tree. This intricate process, which involves the regulated transport of ions, solutes, and water, is crucial for maintaining bile volume, composition, and alkalinity.

Cholangiocytes are also central to the pathogenesis of a group of liver diseases known as cholangiopathies, where they are the primary targets of injury. Furthermore, they play an active role in liver regeneration and can contribute to inflammation, fibrosis, and carcinogenesis in chronic disease states.
