N-Methyltryptamine (NMT)
-Methyltryptamine is a putative psychoactive drug of the tryptamine chemical class which may purportedly have psychedelic properties. It is an alkaloid that has been found in the bark, shoots and leaves of several species of Virola, Acacia and Mimosa plants, among others, many of which also contain the related compounds N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT). It is also synthetized in the body by humans as a metabolic endproduct of the amino acid L-tryptophan. Upon ingestion, NMT appears to produce no psychoactive effects on its own whatsoever, likely as a result of extensive first-pass metabolism. However, it may very well become active upon combination with a MAOI, identical in concept to the strategy of using the harmala alkaloids or other MAOIs to bring the normally inactive orally-consumed ayahausca preparations into prominent psychoactivity.
