Breast Cancer Metastasis Suppressor 1 (BRMS1)

There are several regions spanning the long arm of chromosome 11 for which associations have been made with progression of breast cancer. Among the most common changes are amplification and deletion involving regions near band 11q13. Deletions involving 11q13-q14 are observed in high frequency in late-stage, metastatic breast carcinomas. This gene reduces the metastatic potential, but not the tumorogenicity, of human breast cancer and melanoma cell lines. The Breast cancer metastasis-suppressor 1 localizes primarily to the nucleus and is a component of the mSin3a family of histone deacetylase complexes (HDAC). The protein contains two coiled-coil motifs and several imperfect leucine zipper motifs. Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
