The inducibility of the CRABP2 gene suggests that this isoform is important in retinoic acid-mediated regulation of human skin growth and differentiation. It has been postulated that the CRABP2 gene is transcriptionally regulated by a newly synthesized regulatory protein. It was shown to be approximately 4.6 kb long and divided into 4 exons in a structure common to other members of the family of serum and cellular retinoid-binding proteins. The chromosomal location of the Crabp-2 locus was determined by interspecific backcross analysis using progeny derived from matings of C57BL/6J and M. spretus. Mapping results indicated that the gene is located on mouse chromosome 2 linked to muscle nicotinic acetylcholine receptor alpha-chain (Acra) and catalase-1 (Cas-1).
